Today we have entered a race organised by Weta and Ian Brodie, author of the Lord of the Rings Location Guidebook. The task is to get around as many of the Wellington region film locations used for the Lord of the Rings movies, taking photos to prove that each place was visited.
Starting at the Weta Cave at 9am we were given a great race page to use in our photos to prove we’d visited today and then we were off.
It was a misty, still day with a suitably moody atmosphere. I thought we could try Mt Victoria first, the mist adding to the film location look for the photos we’d be taking. Unfortunately we didn’t really get our locations right and spent a good half hour wandering the wrong paths. Turns out I should have been listening to Keryn (she had the guidebook and the phone with GPS) rather than going on instinct. We found our spots in the end, and got plenty of exercise as well.

Next we headed north to the Hutt valley and took photos on the at the Drycreek Quarry, the Hutt River, Harcourt park, at another location on the river and then on to Kaitoke. It was much easier to find the locations at these areas, mostly becuase they were closer to the road and we’re more familiar with the general area.
